Hunter's Paradise
Clarendon lies in the heart of the Big Woods. Clarendon also serves as the "Gateway to the Cache and White River National Wildlife Refuges" (NWR), with the White River Bridge serving as the boundary between the two refuges. The Refuges together total over 200,000 acres of protected area. Residents and visitors enjoy fishing and hunting in the forested wetlands.
The Big Woods of Arkansas is considered to be the single most important mallard duck wintering area in the lower Mississippi Valley. Duck hunting is important to the local way of life and economy. Businesses such as guiding services and lodges have sprouted to cater to local and non-resident hunters who come to hunt waterfowl in Arkansas. Other popular waterfowl species that winter in the Big Woods include wood ducks, northern pintails, and gadwall. Goose hunting can also be enjoyed in the surrounding agricultural areas.
