Hunter's Paradise
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) of Arkansas, working with the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, began an inventory of the wetlands of the Arkansas "Delta" in 1988. Though more than 80% of the bottomland hardwood forests in the Delta had been lost, a magnificent half million acre continuous corridor of wetland forests remained in the Cache and lower White River areas.
Through efforts of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC), the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), with support from TNC, Natural Heritage Commission, Ducks Unlimited and the Arkansas Wildlife Federation, the RAMSAR Convention of the United Nations has deemed the public areas "internationally important wetlands."
The Nature Conservancy calls the half million acres of forested wetlands the "Big Woods of Arkansas," and has been working with public and private partners to conserve, restore, expand, connect and sustainably use the natural resources of the Big Woods.
