2006 Festival Fun

The 2006 festival promised to be a hit for the whole family! Be sure to come out and participate in all the fun. Your favorite activities will be returning, and who's curiosity isn't absolutely piqued as to what that Ivory-billed bird has been up to this past year? Well, be at the festival so you can get an update from the experts as they share just what they've seen of the Big Boy in the Big Woods this year!

For the birds...

Renowned birder and contributing editor for National Geographic Traveler and Living Bird magazines, author Mel White returns this year. Mel White specializes in nature and travel writing: in addition to winning the 2002 Lowell Thomas Award for best environmental journalism article, he authored the National Geographic Guide to Birdwatching Sites and A Birder's Guide to Arkansas, among other titles. Also Dr. Dan Scheiman will be with us. Dr. Scheiman is Bird Conservation Director for Audubon Arkansas, the state office of the National Audubon Society. Dan has a B.S. from Cornell University, an M.S. from Eastern Illinois University, and a Ph.D. from Purdue University. He has been birding for over 18 years and has over 10 years of bird research experience.

For all you early birds out there, both Mel and Dr. Scheiman will be leading bird walks at 7 a.m. For the later-morning people, Mel will lead a walk on the levee at 8:30 a.m. while Dan will take birders on a field trip to the Louisiana Purchase State Park. At the Purchase site there is a boardwalk leading into the tupelo swamp, and birders are almost guaranteed to see Prothonotary warblers, among other spring migrants.

At 10:00 the "Birds of Prey" program from the Little Rock Zoo will begin on the Monroe County Courthouse lawn.

At 11:00 the Big Woods Conservation Partnership, including Cornell University, will give an end of the season wrap up on the 2005-2006 search for the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. Don't miss the update on our fine feathered friend!

Fishing fun and other important events...

From 7 to 9 a.m. at the Donald Branch Fishin' Hole there will be a youth fishing derby for anyone under 16 accompanied by an adult. A Martial Arts Exhibition will begin at 11:30. Musical entertainment will begin at 12:00 with the Spiced Up Band. Stewart Pearson will be the final entertainment of the day beginning at 1:30. Boat rides on the White River will begin at 11:00, running every hour. There will be a children's area with games, a rock wall, birdhouse making, and many more activities for the young people. Also set up around the Courthouse will be craft booths. And as always, your favorite food vendors will be there to see that no one goes hungry!
