Where We've Been: U.S.S. Queen City (2 of 2)

After Shelby and his men left Clarendon, Gen. Carr's forces are said to have burned what little they found standing in the town, setting their fires with torches. The town at that time was much smaller than today, consisting of only 15 blocks. There was supposedly a salvage attempt in about 1876-1878 when Captain Keyhoe of the U. S. Service recovered nearly all of the machinery from the wreck of the Queen City, which was lying on the east side of the river just below the railroad bridge at Clarendon. He wore a diving suit and entered a diving bell, into which air was pumped from above, with the aid of machinery pulled by teams of horses, and with two flatboats, all that was valuable was hauled up and shipped away.

The USS Queen City became a research interest of the American Archaeology Division of the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1977. A sunken boat was found, but it could not be determined if it was the wreck of the Queen City.
